Steve Gibson

Steve Gibson is a full-time kayak fishing guide in Sarasota, Fla., who specializes in both salt-water and fresh-water fly fishing.
He has been guiding for 13 years and covers the waters from Tampa Bay to The Everglades. His specialty is spotted seatrout, redfish and snook. He loves to put clients on peacock bass, oscar and Mayan cichlid in the fresh waters of south Florida.
Steve has been tying flies for more than 30 years. Flies he has developed include the Myakka Minnow, D.T. Variation, Gibby’s Snymph and the Big Eye Baitfish.
During the summer, he guides along the beaches of southwest Florida and specializes in sight-fishing snook in clear waters of the surf.
Steve was the Outdoors Editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune for 35 years, retiring in 2009. His writing and photography have appeared in Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, Saltwater Fly Fishing, Paddle World Magazine, Florida Sportsman, Gulf Coast Angler, The Fisherman, Cabela’s Online Magazine, Fisherman’s Journal and the New York Times.
He has been married for 20 years to the former Kathy McGovern of Muskegon, Mich. They reside in Sarasota with their dog, Rudy.
